Team Gateways has won the selection to make a design study for a possible canopy above the entrance of the submerged bicycle storage Stationsplein Amsterdam CS.

The bicycle storage is currently under construction, as part of the project "De Entree" at Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam. The current access to the bicycle storage is carried out without a sheltering roof. It is possible that in the future a canopy will be necessary for safety and availability reasons.

The aim of the project is to determine the preconditions for a safe and sufficiently available access to the bicycle storage by means of design research. The expected result of the project is the preparation of a possible canopy structure that contributes to a reduction of the impact of unfavourable weather conditions and that at the same time delivers an architecturally high-quality spatial integration in the protected cityscape.

Team Gateways consists of: Gateways (team lead, architects and transit facility designers, Amsterdam); SID Studio (structural design studio, Leiden); DGMR (consultants building physics, acoustics and fire safety, Arnhem) and Skaal (building economics consultancy,Amsterdam). The entrance area and the submerged bicycle storage are currently being carried out according to a design by architecture studio wUrck, Rotterdam.
